Australian investment, business and skilled migration

Australian immigration policy highlights (updated 2026)

  • National Innovation Visa (NIV, subclass 858): launched in December 2024 to replace the closed Global Talent Independent program (GTI). It is for people with an internationally recognised record of exceptional achievement in a profession, business, research, sport or the arts, and grants permanent residence on approval.
  • Business Innovation and Investment Program (subclass 188/888): the 188 provisional visa no longer accepts new nominations; existing 188 holders can still apply for the 888 permanent visa if they meet the conditions.
  • Employer sponsorship (subclass 482): now the Skills in Demand visa. Holders who stop working for their sponsor have up to 180 days to find a new sponsoring employer, and can move to permanent residence through employer sponsorship.

Australian Immigration Overview

Australia is a traditional immigration country. Migration has long driven economic growth, eased population ageing and filled skills gaps, and it is also an important channel for family reunion and humanitarian support. The Scanlon Foundation’s social cohesion surveys show that most Australians agree immigrants from different countries make Australia stronger.

In recent years Australia has been one of the most popular destinations for Hong Kong people. Hong Kong applicants can apply through the National Innovation Visa (NIV), skilled migration, employer sponsorship and family visas; existing 188 visa holders can move to the 888 permanent visa if they meet the conditions.

Australia is made up of six states and two mainland territories: Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia, plus the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory.

Benefits of Hong Kong people immigrating to Australia

Australian society is diverse and open, with a strong tradition of freedom and democracy. The pace of life is more relaxed, and outdoor activities, sport and beach culture are popular, which suits people who value family life and work-life balance.

Australia is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world, with residents from hundreds of ethnic backgrounds and a rich mix of arts, culture and sport. Most people live in coastal cities with a fine natural environment and clean air, which is why many Hong Kong people put Australia near the top of their list when considering migration.

High quality education

Australia has a high standard of education and internationally recognised qualifications, attracting large numbers of overseas students every year. It offers a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate and vocational courses, so children can learn and grow in a diverse, open environment.

Several Australian universities rank highly in international university rankings, including the University of Melbourne, the University of Sydney and the Australian National University. Australia also has around 40 universities and many vocational (TAFE) institutes offering recognised degrees, diplomas and professional courses.

Social Security, Welfare Measures and Citizenship

Australian permanent residents can generally enrol in Medicare, the national health insurance scheme, and may apply for social security and family payments if eligible (some payments have a waiting period for new residents). To apply for Australian citizenship, permanent residents generally need to have lived in Australia lawfully for 4 years, including at least 1 year as a permanent resident, and meet the other requirements.

Employment and business opportunities after immigration to Australia

Australia’s labour market spans engineering, management, healthcare, accounting, the trades and education, and many occupations face long-term shortages. Permanent residents can work freely in Australia; before job hunting, check the professional recognition and registration requirements for your field.

Australia’s economy is built on trade, investment, education and services, with a mature business environment. There are many ways for Hong Kong people to migrate to Australia.
