What is OMARA?

The Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority (OMARA) is the Australian Government body responsible for registering migration agents and regulating their professional conduct. It maintains the Register of Migration Agents and administers the applicable Code of Conduct.

In Australia, a person generally must be a registered migration agent or an Australian legal practitioner to provide immigration assistance for a fee or other reward, subject to the exemptions set out in law. Registration is not an endorsement of a particular visa outcome. The Department of Home Affairs makes visa decisions.

What registered migration agents are expected to do

Registered agents must comply with the Migration (Migration Agents Code of Conduct) Regulations 2021. The current Code commenced on 1 March 2022; it should not be described as having taken effect in 2021 merely because the regulations were made that year.

Among other duties, the Code requires agents to act professionally and in their clients’ interests, explain relevant services and costs, keep appropriate records, and handle client money in accordance with the rules. Client money must be dealt with through the required client-account arrangements and kept separate from the agent’s operating funds. The precise obligations depend on the circumstances and the current legislation.

How to check an agent’s registration

  1. Open the official OMARA register.
  2. Search using the agent’s name or MARN. Check the identity, current registration status, contact details and any conditions displayed.
  3. If anything is unclear, contact OMARA using the details on its website before engaging the person. Save a copy or note the date you checked.

A website, business card or social-media profile is not a substitute for checking the live register. Be cautious if someone claims to be registered but cannot provide a verifiable MARN.

Concerns, complaints and suspected unregistered assistance

If you have concerns about a registered migration agent’s professional conduct, you can review OMARA’s guidance and make a complaint to OMARA. OMARA may investigate conduct within its authority, but it does not decide visa applications, guarantee a complaint outcome, or generally recover money or resolve contractual disputes for clients. You may need to seek separate legal or consumer advice about those issues.

To report suspected immigration fraud or unregistered people providing immigration assistance, see the Australian Department of Home Affairs’ Border Watch reporting information. For questions about an application already lodged, contact the Department through its official channels.

Frequently asked questions

Does a registered agent guarantee that a visa will be granted?

No. Registration concerns an agent’s authority and professional obligations. Only the Department of Home Affairs can decide a visa application, and the result depends on the applicant’s circumstances and the applicable requirements.

How can I confirm John Bosco Hu’s current registration?

Search MARN 0746141 in the official OMARA register. At the time this article was checked, the entry showed “Registered” and a new period commencing 27 October 2026. Please check the live register for current information.

Can OMARA get my visa approved or return my fees?

OMARA regulates agents and may investigate complaints within its remit. It does not decide visa applications and generally cannot order a visa grant or resolve fee-refund and contractual disputes. Consider independent legal or consumer advice if you need help with those matters.

Where can I report suspected unregistered immigration assistance?

Use the Department of Home Affairs’ Border Watch reporting channels for suspected immigration fraud or unregistered assistance, and refer to OMARA for questions about registered agents.
