    Canadian Parent Visa

As of November 5, 2011, the processing of applications for sponsoring a parent or grandparent will be suspended for up to 24 months. Parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents have a new option to come to Canada – the Parent and Grandparent Super Visa. The suspension allows us to focus on those applicants waiting for a visa and reduce the backlog of applications for the Parent and Grandparent category of visas. This visa is valid for 10 years and allows you to visit family in Canada for up to two years.

    Eligibility

Visa officers consider several factors before deciding whether to accept an application.

    • Must be a “parent” or “grandparent” of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
    • Dependents of “parents” and “grandparents” are not eligible for a super visa. However, they can apply for a regular tourist visa.
    • Super Visa applicants must also be deemed admissible to Canada and meet other conditions.

The visa officer must be satisfied that the applicant is a genuine visitor to Canada and will leave at the end of his or her visit. The officer may consider the following:

    • Relationship between immigrants and their place of origin
    • Purpose of visit
    • The person’s family and financial situation
    • The overall economic and political stability of the country of origin
    • Invitation from Canadian institution

The “parent” or “grandparent” must also do the following:

    • Provide a letter of guarantee of financial support from their child or grandchild in Canada (who has the minimum qualifying income)
    • Proof that the visitor will have Canadian health insurance for at least one year to ensure they are covered while in Canada
    • Pass the immigration medical examination
